Back at the station, Davis decided to give an update. He was about to explore his one lead, learn more about Williams, and gain more insight into who wanted him dead.
âCaptain . . .â When Davis knocked, Captain Jones lifted his head and waved Davis into his office.
âYou here to tell me why the hell you were down at Police Palace pissing off Chief Trent?â
That was fast.
âI had questions.â
âAbout a case that doesnât have squat to do with the one youâre working. I get that youâre new, but you have to know better than pissing off the guys that make the final call on whether or not you keep your job.â
Davis shrugged nonchalantly from just inside the captainâs doorway. âBeing liked isnât a quality of me doing my job. If Chief Trent prefers his detectives to half-ass with cases, then maybe his job should be in question.â
âCute, Davis. If you want to go on a suicide mission, thatâs on you, but leave the rest of us out of it. Stay the hell away from Trent and that case. It has nothing to do with what youâre working on.â
âTechnically, it does.â
Captainâs face went hard. âHow so?â
âWilliams had a flash drive with information about the Arnold case on it. It was in the safe deposit box.â
âHow the hell did he get that, and why am I just now finding out?â
âCassidy. She has a copy of the case file at her house. There were handwritten notes and questions regarding the case, things she was concerned about years later. If she somehow mishandled the case, then Williams was likely considering blackmailing her.â
âYou saying thatâs her motive?â
âCould be. Many careers were fast-tracked, thanks to the outcome of that case. APD put an end to a national manhunt for a serial rapist. The case got a lot of press. If word got out that Cassidy was second-guessing . . .â
âYou ask her about it?â Davis noticed something in his eyes.
âI did.â
âAnd?â
âI donât think she killed the guy because of it.â
I donât think she killed him at all.
âThen leave it alone. You go digging into that case, and youâll make a lot of enemies.â
âLike Chief? Did you know he had an intimate relationship with Cassidy while they were on the case? You were only a sergeant back then, butââ
âOf course, I knew. I know everything that goes on under my roof. Past and present.â
âAnd you didnât have a problem with it?â
âWhat I have a problem with is why youâre so concerned about the two of them. Should I consider this a problem?â
Davis smirked. âNot at all, Captain. Just doing my job as thoroughly as possible. Had a lead, followed it, and nothing panned out.â
âThen what do you have? Iâm beginning to wonder if I made a wrong move handing this case over to you. No new evidence. No current suspects other than Cassidy. Not a damn thing getting us any closer to the finish line.â
âI have a leadâsomeone who can potentially give more insight on Williams. The guy is an utter mystery.
